Tripadvisor safe house milwaukee11/27/2023 ![]() Really, it's a fun place, so if you're looking for a "fun" meal when in Milwaukee, I suggest going. If you are a spy-buff, or maybe just really into Bond or Bourne, for sure check it out. However, I was hoping for a little more in regards to the "safe house & spy" design of the building. ![]() My brother-in-law only found that by accident because (like all of us) he was playing around with everything there. There are some fun things there, including a secret exit. The servings were managable in size, though, which is nice and a big change from most other restaurants out there. We all tried some type of pasta dish I believe, so we didn't form an opinion of their steaks or other higher priced dishes. In our opinion it was a little overpriced. (Good thing we stuck around because we were almost going to leave and walk around downtown.) The food was okay. Well, I don't know if it's part of the spy games, but we were seated within 30 minutes. When we first entered we were told we'd have a 2 hour wait because we didn't have a reservation. Sometimes you have to do that, though, to appreciate all of the nuances to the building. I'm glad we were given a chance to freely do that, but we all felt a little awkward walking around and standing near people eating their meal. After our waitress took our order she suggested we walk around and check the place out. It is a maze-like building with all kinds of nooks and crannies. Once we were in the restaurant we got to see what some of the hype was about. We were greeted in a room that appeared to just be a small room. As we entered the establishment it started tantalizing our curiosity making us wonder what adventures and fun we'd experience for going to a "restaurant". I've heard about it for years including when it's been on food and travel shows. *I will not give away secrets in this review - the unknown is what makes it fun* I went with my wife, sister, & brother-in-law for the first time to the Safe House. Huh? We will think hard before we return on our next trip to town. ![]() 3 of 4 adults ordered "specialty" cocktails they the server refused to let us order another one because they need to use the same glass. The food (steak sandwich, chicken sandwich, French dip, and kids meals) were mediocre at best. Once we were seated, it took a full 17 minutes for a server to even acknowledge us, and another 10 minutes past that to get drink orders even taken. We waited 15 minutes past our reservation time for our table (right inside the door - we could see it sitting set and ready from the time we got in). The service from the front desk once we got into the actual restaurant to the server for our table was terrible. I am hoping when I took my husband, kids and friends there this visit they were just having an off night. Overall, it’s a fun mix of history, surprises, delicious food, strong drinks, music, magic and secrets.I used to go to the Safe House regularly when I was in college in Milwaukee in the late 90's. Enjoy spy-themed drinks, like the “Spy’s Demise” and the “Double Agent,” in a vintage bar. Hint: Control never turned away agents on the run because they didn’t know the password. You’ll need a password to enter, or at least enough sense of humor to make animal sounds, dance and do silly poses until the doorman lets you in. The building is hidden in an alley and misleadingly labeled International Exports Ltd. In the German Sector, you’ll see a Checkpoint Charlie replica and a genuine piece of the Berlin Wall. The museum is separated into different “sectors” - like the Hong Kong Sector, Mediterranean Sector and, the most fact-focused area, the German Sector - with a mix of factual and fictional exhibits and artifacts. Other highlights include a magician’s bar, fun house mirrors, the country’s oldest running Press Club, a petrified cat that’s also the Press Club’s mascot, a key-shaped dance floor, hidden booths, a secret phone booth exit, an interrogation chamber where you’ll be a questioned in an 86′ bomber ejection seat and more. Ladies, make sure to check out the bathroom and touch Burt Reynolds package - if you dare. Wandering down dark, narrow hallways, you’ll find a phone booth where you can get an alibi if you blow your cover, as well as the world’s largest mechanical puzzle, where you must figure out whose the double agent. Serving hungry agents since 1966, The Safe House is a spy-themed restaurant and museum containing mysteries and even a hidden exit. In the Intelligence trade, a safe house is “a secret refuge for spies engaging in covert operations.” These places look unassuming on the outside - and good luck finding the door - but on the inside are spaces for conducting clandestine activities.
